Johnny Lewis Thigpen, 74, of North Charleston died Wednesday, January 27, 2021. Johnny was born November 2, 1946 in Kingstree, SC and moved with his family to Park Circle in the 1960's. He attended Garrett and RB Stall High Schools where he made outstanding contributions to both the football and track teams. He went on to attend Baptist College and College of Charleston.
He owned and operated Johnny's Restaurant on East Montague Avenue for 31 years where he served his famously delicious hamburgers and hotdogs.
He was also an accomplished General Contractor who completed the first commercial building renovation in the Park Circle Business District at 1044 East Montague Avenue for his daughter Renee. He strongly believed in the revitalization of Montague Avenue and he went on to renovate several other commercial buildings on the street and nearby residential homes to spearhead investment in the area that continues to this day. His commitment and investment in the Park Circle community is his true legacy.
He enjoyed playing golf, pool, and making people smile. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father and grandfather as well as a terrific friend to all who knew him.
He is survived by his brothers: Bobby G. Thigpen and Raymond M. Thigpen; his wife, Suzanne; daughters: Renee and Rebekah; grandson, Randall Peagler; and three great-grandchildren: Jaden, Cadence, and Carson.
