On January 31, 2013 John David Westendorff, Jr. went home to be with his Lord. He was born in Charleston on August 9, 1937 to the late John David Westendorff, Sr. and Hazel Hill Westendorff. He attended Charleston schools, including Porter Military Academy and Murray Vocational High School. He was a clerk at C.W. Westendorff and Son hardware store. He was a lifelong member of St. James/Asbury-St. James United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir, served as acolyte, crucifer, and won an award for perfect Sunday school attendance for 40 years. David worked many years collecting money for the Mother's March of Dimes and in a special presentation received a key to the city. He collected scrap metal for the war effort achieving the level of colonel. Throughout the years he enjoyed scouting, fishing, gardening, and trains. His grandfather, who was a railroad man, once said that as a small boy David knew more about the train schedules than the people who made them. He also enjoyed collecting coins and Native American memorabilia. He loved biking and participating in the Cooper River Bridge Walk. He was a huge Rainbow/Riverdog baseball fan, loved Charleston history, and Civil War re-enactments. He participated in several sports with the Special Olympics and won many local and state awards in bowling.
He is survived by his loving mother, Hazel Westendorff and five adoring siblings: Susan W. (Patrick) Bullock, Pamela W. Prestegard, Jamie (Judy) Westendorff, Debbie W. Seifert of Charleston and Kelly W. (Horace) Powell of Adams Run and twenty seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John D. Westendorff, Sr.
A celebration of life will be 2 PM Sunday, February 3, 2013 in Asbury-St. James United Methodist Church, 754 Rutledge Ave., Charleston. Interment, Riverview Memorial Park. Visitation will be Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 5-7 PM at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
