John Joseph “Jack” Vax, 96, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of the late Ruth Roark Vax, entered into eternal rest Saturday, August 29, 2026.

Born September 25, 1929, in Pittston, Pennsylvania, Jack was the son of the late John and Edna Vaxmonsky. He graduated from the University of Scranton in 1950 and proudly served in the United States Army. While stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, he met Ruth Roark. They married May 1, 1954, beginning an almost 50-year marriage and a family that would become Jack’s greatest legacy.

Jack enjoyed a successful banking career in Chicago where he was also the ultimate Bears fan. He retired with Ruth to the Charleston area in 1996. After Ruth's passing, Jack went on to enjoy many years of travel and companionship with his good friend and partner, the late Esther Bast, of Mt. Pleasant. In retirement, he devoted himself to family, friendship, faith, and service. God created Jack to have a compassion and love for others. Throughout his 96 years he has fulfilled God's will, by creating a large and loving family, developing many lasting friendships, and volunteering for worthy charitable organizations, including The Rotary Club, Meals on Wheels, Knights of Columbus and serving the church he loved-thus improving the lives of countless people.

An eternal optimist, Jack never met a stranger and rarely missed an opportunity to tell a joke. His warmth, humor, generosity, and genuine interest in others created friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Jack is survived by his children, Susan V. Quinn (Patrick) and Nancy V. Schenck (Jeff), both of Brighton, Michigan; Linda Ruth Kuntz (David) of Isle of Palms, South Carolina; and John J. Vax (Natalie) of Prague, Czech Republic; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, September 24, 2026 at 11:00 am at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 950 Darrell Creek Trail, Mount Pleasant. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at St Benedict at approximately 12 noon. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel.
