John Robert Tidwell, 68, of Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, August 12, 2015. His funeral service will be held graveside, Saturday, August 15, 2015 in Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Road at 3:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.
John was born September 2, 1946 in Pensacola, Florida. He was predeceased by his parents, Fulmer Tidwell and Rosalie Grooms Tidwell. He is survived by his wife Joyce "Elaine" Tidwell. They were married for 43 years. John is also survived by one sister, Patricia Hickfang, of Norcross, GA.
John was so proud of his boys...Jason and Matt Tidwell. He loved them and was so proud of who they were and the fathers they had become. He loved his daughters-in-law.... Stephanie (Jason) and Vanessa (Matt) who provided him much needed help and loving care during his extended illness. His grandchildren, Jacob, Aspen and Beckett Tidwell were the delight of his heart.
John served and retired from the United States Coast Guard. He served in Vietnam and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze stars and also the Coast Guard Sea Service Ribbon with one Silver and one Bronze Star. When he re-enlisted in the Coast Guard, he was personally re-enlisted by President Nixon in Washington. He also worked for Roper Hospital in Security and Sterilization before his long illness.
John always loved animals and his wish is that instead of flowers, donations be made to the Charleston Animal Society (ASPCA) 2455 Remount Road, North Charleston, SC 29406. This man loved animals so much that each year instead of Christmas gifts he would request his gift be sent in monetary funds to the SPCA. He is survived by his dogs Piggy, Pricie and Peanut and his grand-dogs Trudy and Toa.
We would also like to recognize Patty Shelton with Roper Home Health, Beth Miller with Roper Physical Therapy and the entire Southern Care Hospice team including Carrie Wood and Tierra Davis that made the last days of John's life so much easier and much more comfortable in his own home. Their care and devotion was so very much appreciated by John and his family.
