John Freeman Taylor, Jr., of Awendaw, SC passed away on September 25, 2025. He was a devoted husband, beloved father, proud grandfather, and cherished friend to many.

Freeman was born on December 29, 1943, and raised in old Mt. Pleasant, SC where his deep love for the Lowcountry took root. He was predeceased by his parents, John Freeman Taylor and Geraldine Foster Taylor, as well as his sister, Geraldine Louise “Gerry Lou” Taylor, and brother, Samuel Foster Taylor of Mt. Pleasant.

Freeman is survived by his loving wife Elaine (Bunny) Welch Taylor of Awendaw, SC and his children, Fraser Benzal (Stuart) of Schenectady, NY, Banks Yatsula (Richard) of Tampa, FL, Jennifer Taylor-Davis of Lenoir, NC, and step-daughter, Donna Wadsworth (Drew) of Charleston, SC. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren: Grace Benzal, Christopher Yatsula, Anne Marie Yatsula, Christian Yatsula, Andrew (Drew) Taylor Davis, Jessica Davis, and Marc Jameson (Jamie) Fennessy. He is also remembered fondly by his niece, Stephanie Taylor Kennedy (Brian) and nephew, Samuel Foster Taylor, Jr.

Freeman was a man of many talents. He was a lifelong outdoorsman, who found joy in boating, fishing, horseback riding, and cooking for family and friends. His true passions, however, were woodworking and music. There was not a piece of furniture Freeman could not make or refinish. Fortunate family members have treasured pieces of Freeman’s furniture in their homes. His passion for music, the saxophone most especially, was what most people remember from his younger days. He was a member of several bands and his saxophone playing was well known throughout the Charleston area. Whenever he was playing, he had loyal followers who loved listening to his music and seeing him perform.

Freeman worked for the International Longshoreman Association most of his life. He possessed a brilliant mind and had a remarkable memory, especially when it came to the history and lore of the Lowcountry – particularly Mt. Pleasant and McClellanville, SC. His storytelling was masterful, his laughter infectious, and his presence unforgettable.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. In remembrance, the family suggests donations be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, to the Coastal Conservation League, or by planting a tree to preserve the special Lowcountry he so loved.
