John W. "Jack" Sample, Jr., D.V.M., 81, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Karol A. Sample, died Friday, September 2, 2016. The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at 52 Boardman Road, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Jack was born May 23, 1935 at the Jordan Inn in Monetta, South Carolina, son of the late John Wendell Sample, Sr. and Helen Jordan Sample. He completed his undergraduate studies at Clemson University before attending Veterinary School at the University of Georgia, where he received his D.V.M. in 1958. After two years in the Army, which included service as a post veterinarian at Fort Knox, KY, he established the Ashley River Animal Hospital, where he cared for lowcountry pets for over 40 years.
An avid Clemson fan and a voracious reader of history, Jack loved to talk football and debate history and politics. He loved his family and his friends in Charleston, Ridge Spring and Reevesville.
He is survived by two sons, Christopher W. Sample (Wendy) of Lexington, SC, and Dr. Jeffrey A. Sample of Charleston, SC; two daughters, Linda K. Shonka (Peter) of Richmond Hill, GA, and Leslie C. Poteat of Charleston, SC; and five grandchildren: Brian, Jordan and Bradley Shonka, and Brooks and Skyler Sample. Jack was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Jerry J. Sample.
