John Halsey Norton

John Halsey Norton, 90, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Peggy Meadows Norton passed away on Tuesday, November 12, 2013. His Funeral Service will be graveside on Friday, November 15, 2013 in the Beaufort National Cemetery. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. The family will receive friends at the funeral chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Thursday, November 14, 2013.

John was born on April 17, 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of the late Paul T. Norton, Jr. and the late Eleanor Halsey Norton. His early years were spent in Madison, Wisconsin and Blacksburg, Virginia. John was educated at Christchurch School, Christchurch, Virginia and Virginia Tech, graduating in 1944 with an honors degree in Mechanical Engineering. After serving in the United States Army during World War II as an officer in the Ordinance Department, he worked in the family business in Columbus, Ohio. He married the love of his life, Peggy Meadows of Radford, Virginia in 1946. He then joined DuPont Company in 1951 and worked in various departments including Engineering, Development, International, Central Research and Transportation and Distribution. He retired at the end of 1982 as head of the Transportation and Distribution Department. John was past board member of the Transportation Association of America, National Industrial Traffic League and Transportation Data Coordinating Committee and was also President of the National Freight Transportation Association in 1981. After retirement he was a transportation consultant, partner in Rail Switching Services of Dothan, Alabama and arbitrator for American Arbitration Association of Philadelphia.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Peggy Norton of Mount Pleasant, SC; daughter, Susan Minor and her husband, Robert, of Nashville, TN; son, John Norton, Jr. and his wife, Phyllis, of Mount Pleasant, SC; three granddaughters, Thornley Minor McWilliam and her husband, David, Dana Norton, and Laura Norton; two great grandsons, Robert McWilliam and James McWilliam; one brother, Frederic T. Norton of Arizona. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Brushwood
