John Joseph Nelson, 97, husband of the late Emma Wilhelmsen Nelson, of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on November 1, 2023.
Mr. Nelson was born November 10, 1925 in Charleston SC, son of the late John Joseph Nelson, Sr. and his wife Susan Catherine Nelson. John was preceded in death by his first wife Louise McCulloch Nelson and his second wife Emma Wilhelmsen Nelson. John is survived by his sister Helen Lindsey of Albany GA and his children Jo Garvin (John), John J. Nelson, Jr. (Deborah), Christine Pederson, Diane Davis of Montgomery AL, Kathy Hicks (Steve) of Knoxville TN, John L. Nelson (Cile), Joann Westberry (Clifford), Jay Nelson (Shauna), 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
John was a WWII Veteran serving in the USCG Merchant Marine and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. He also served in Korea and Vietnam. After an honorable discharge John worked on the Charleston waterfront for several years with numerous shipping companies. After retiring from the waterfront John and his wife Emma operated a woodcraft business mainly selling their products at the Charleston City Market for over 30 years until the time of his passing.
In the 97 years that John lived, he was so many things to so many people. He was a son, a brother, a hero, a husband, a Daddy, a PopPop, an uncle and a friend. John truly had a heart of gold, always looking out for others, lending a listening ear, or his arms for a hug. John didn’t just live for his happiness but for the happiness of others.
