John R. Nash, Jr., M.D., 80, of Edisto Island, S.C., slipped into the next room on Sunday, March 26, 2023. He was born on April 12, 1942, in Charlotte, N.C., the first of four children to John Raymond and Frances Crowell Nash. After earning degrees in business and economics from UNC-Chapel Hill and Emory University, respectively, he worked for a management consultant firm based in Atlanta. After living in a Manhattan hotel room for a year, he decided to pursue a new career with greater rewards and better hours, in medicine, delivering babies. He graduated in 1976 from the MUSC College of Medicine, performed a residency at Carolinas Medical Center and began a 27-year career in which he brought healing, joy and comfort to thousands of families.
He loved his friends, a good laugh, an assertive Bloody Mary, R&B, shag dancing, watercolor painting, making up his own recipes, giving his kids bad haircuts, the water and everything in it, his beloved island, Tarheel basketball (even this season) and above all, his wife and family. He searched for the content of people’s character and strived to honor the first and second greatest commandments, to love God and his neighbor.
He was predeceased by his brother, David, and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Susanne; son John (Kathy) of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; daughter Molly Dantzler (Patrick) of Levy, S.C., sister Jane (Bill) of Edisto Island; brother Tom (Jim Smallridge) of Charlotte; grandchildren Jackson Nash, Scott Nash, Lilly Dantzler, and Lucy Dantzler; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends, all of whom he has blessed with a lifetime of rich and riotous memories.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 31, at 1 p.m. at the Episcopal Church on Edisto, 1650 Highway 174, Edisto Island, with visitation to follow at 8630 Middleton Point Lane. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Planned Parenthood or the ETV Endowment of South Carolina.
