James Island- John Owen Murray, Jr., "Captain Jack", 83, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Romaine Ronnie Theresa Sones Murray entered into eternal rest Monday, February 4, 2013. A private service will be held at a later date in Matlacha, FL.
John was born December 28, 1929 in Charleston, SC, son of the late John Owen Murray, Sr., and Allie Mae Hart Murray. Raised on Wadmalaw Island, John worked for the United States Department of Agriculture as a Food Inspector. During the late 1950's and early 1960's, along with his father and brother they owned and operated the Bounty and the Joan Frances shrimp boats. In 1963 John bought the first Mustang, a deep sea fishing boat, which operated out of the City Marina in downtown Charleston. In 1966 he had a custom deep sea fishing boat built and named the Mustang II, which he operated until 1976 when John and Ronnie semi-retired to Matlacha, FL to run the Mustang's Colt. He had 18 wonderful years in Matlacha, shrimping and sharing good times with friends and retired as the Captain of the Colt. They then moved to Fairhope, AL to spend the next 18 years enjoying life. John was a licensed HAM Radio operator W4JOM. After facing and surviving many hurricanes on the Gulf Coast, they decided to return to Charleston at the repeated request of their son. He lived on James Island for the next five years, taking pleasure in the company of family and new friends, Cas and Jim.
He is survived by his wife, Ronnie of 52 years; son, Captain Michael J. Murray and Lynne of James Island; two daughters, Laura Ann Pace and Paul of Spring City, TN, Crystal Hart Hadden and John of Matlacha, FL and three grandchildren; Erich Owen Murray, Heather Romaine Casteel and Chris, Brian Howard Pace and Lorien. In additions to his parents, John is predeceased by his brother, Richard H. Murray and sister, Joan M. Liston.
