Dr. John Girardeau Murray, III, (Gerry), 79, husband for 56 years to Ora Dell Henderson Murray, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 6, 2016. His memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. March 12, 2016 in the Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island, 2164 Hwy 174, with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. Arrangements by J. Gerry was born August 18, 1936, to the late John G. Murray, Jr., and the late Marian Calhoun Murray of Edisto Island, SC. He was a graduate of St. Paul's High School. Gerry served with the US Army. He was a graduate of Clemson University, and the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, where he served on the Board of Examiners. Dr. Murray dedicated his life to the care of animals, and owned James Island Veterinary Hospital for 25 years. During his career, he was president of the South Carolina Association of Veterinarians, receiving the Distinguished Veterinarian Award. He was chosen as the veterinarian for the Red Wolf Project, served on the National Board of Large Animal Veterinary Consultants, and was on the Board of Agri-Missions. He was also a Clemson University Field Veterinarian. He continued the care of large animals up until 2015. Dr. Murray will be remembered as a faithful follower of Jesus Christ participating as a Church Elder and Treasurer at various churches.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ora Dell (Okie) H. Murray; three children: John G. Murray, IV, (Jennifer) of Lawrenceville, GA; Anna Catherine Lake (Larry) of Richmond, VA; Charles Murray (Lisa) of Aiken, SC; eight grandchildren: Kelly Downs, Jake Murray (Emily), Katie Beth Murray, Mari Claire Lake, Matthew Lake, Amie Myers Lake, Logan Murray, Sterling Murray, and a great-granddaughter, Julie Carol Downs; brother, James C. Murray (Linda); sister, Betty Bryan; brother-in-law, John D. Henderson, Jr., (Nan); sister-in-law Libby Davis (Walt), and many beloved nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island, Edisto Beach Baptist Church, Trinity Anglican Church, Edsito Island, or Christ-St.Paul's Anglican Church Yonges Island, SC.
