John Allen Miles IV, 87, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Henrietta King Miles, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, December 31, 2014. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 3, 2015 in Grace Episcopal Church, 98 Wentworth Street at 12:00 p.m. The family will receive friends following the service in Hanahan Hall. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel.
Allen was born May 4, 1927 in Asheville, North Carolina, son of the late John Allen Miles III and Susie Tuten Miles. Allen grew up in Moncks Corner, graduated from Porter Military Academy and served in the Navy during World War II. He attended Clemson College and earned his degree in engineering from the General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan as a veteran student. He was with Allen Miles Pontiac in Moncks Corner and then served as the Technical Service Representative for Oldsmobile Division of General Motors Corporation. Finally, he was owner of Coin Laundry Enterprises for many years.
Allen was a member of the South Carolina Aeronautical Association, South Carolina Breakfast Club, and Quiet Birdman Aviation Group. Life member of the Huguenot Society and Past Member of the St. Cecelia Society, Carolina Yacht Club, Sertoma, Rotary and Country Club of Charleston. He was a former Vestry Member of Grace Episcopal Church and a founding member and Member Emeritus of Charleston County Aviation Authority.
Allen was instrumental in the development of Charleston Executive Airport and was a skilled private pilot. Allen's studious nature led him to develop a deep passion for history, especially that of the Lowcountry. In retirement, he became a licensed tour guide of Charleston and Berkeley counties.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, John Allen Miles, V, and his wife, Lou Young Ledford, of Charleston, SC, Captain William "Billy" Louis Miles, and his wife, Florence Harley Wilson, of Charleston, SC; daughter, Julie Miles Walters, and her husband, Brigadier General (Ret.) Gregory Neil Walters, of Charleston, SC; grandchildren, William Louis Miles, Leila Ancrum Miles, Ellinor Gaillard Walters, Elizabeth Miles Walters, Gregory Neil Walters, Jr., and Sarah Margaret Miles; as well as two nieces, Ellen Lyman Wade and Selina Lyman Murray.
