John (Jack) Richard McWhorter passed away suddenly at home on Monday evening , September 8, 2025. While his family are saddened by his death, they are thankful that he passed on his terms - quickly and at home.
Jack was born on July 27th, 1944, in New York, New York, to William Paul and Elizabeth Rhoads Rudolph McWhorter. He was raised in Clarksburg, West Virginia, and he graduated in 1967 from West Virginia University with a BS in Business Administration and Marketing. Jack belonged to the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and was elected president two separate times. He also served in the ROTC during his college years. He served as a First Lieutenant in the US Army from 1967 until 1969 in Munsan, Korea.
Jack began his career at Lincoln Financial Corporation in October, 1969, and worked tirelessly up through the corporate ranks until 2002 when he retired after serving as the President and CEO of Kyoei Lincoln Reinsurance Services in Tokyo, Japan.
He met his wife, Cathy Elizabeth Hamm, while working at Lincoln in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, in 1969. They were married in April 1970 and remained married for 55 years. Jack and Cathy had two children, Christine and Michael, and they retired to Edisto Island in 2002. While living on Edisto, Jack served in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Edisto Beach Planning Commission and other volunteer organizations. He also was a licensed realtor.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and his brother David. He is survived by his wife Cathy, daughter Christine Michelle McWhorter Simon of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, son Michael Christopher McWhorter (Janey) of Orinda, California, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and his sister Betty Anne Allen, of St. Simon’s Island, Georgia.
Arrangements are being handled by J. Henry Stuhr., Inc., West Ashley Chapel. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack’s memory to the Edisto Island Historic Preservation Society (8123 Chisolm Plantation Road, Edisto Island, SC 29438).
