John Francis Mcgough

John Francis McGough, 86, a native of Connecticut and beloved husband of Maryanne Wicko McGough, died Sunday, October 10 at his home in Kiawah, with his wife and her "sister" Elaine at his bedside.

John was a man of myriad accomplishments, each of which gave him great joy.  His career spanned many years and included being a Founding Trustee of Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut; Superintendent of Schools of the Bridgeport, Connecticut Diocese; and Vice President of Corporate Human Resources at Sandoz (now Novartis) Pharmaceuticals in New Jersey.  John was an avid reader who also appreciated the joys of music as well as the occasional round of golf.

John will be remembered and deeply missed by his wife, family, and friends whom he touched in so many ways.  He was a spontaneous man who loved surprises and whose gentleness and unselfishness earned him the friendship, respect, and affection of the many people whose lives he enriched.  Nicknamed "Reds," John's Irish wit and gift of storytelling endeared him to all who were fortunate to know him.  His generosity, warmth, and unfailing ability to understand and love his fellow human beings will be remembered and cherished.

John is survived by his wife of 34 years, Maryanne, by cousins in Vermont and Connecticut, and a niece and two nephews by marriage.

The family wishes to thank the Hospice of Charleston for guiding them on this difficult journey and is especially grateful to Sara Jones, RN, who had almost a sixth sense of what was needed on any given day.

A Mass of Christian Burial is planned in Nichols, Connecticut, with committal in Lakeview Cemetery in Bridgeport.  Details are pending.
