John George Kanellos, husband of Hamilton Rodman Kanellos died at home on June, 2, 2011. He was born on June 2, 1924 in Charleston, SC. He was the first generation of the Kanellos family to be born in America. His Greek parents, the late George Constantine Kanellos and Olga Milonadakis Kanellos were born in Parsa and Chesma, Smyrna, Asia Minor.
His early education began in the elementary schools of Charleston including afternoon Greek School at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity. He graduated from Charleston High School with a Classical Diploma in Latin. He played the Piccolo in the high school band and the Violin in both the Charleston String Symphony and the Charleston Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. He attended the College of Charleston until he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944. He served on the USS Atlanta CL-104 where he saw duty in the Pacific.
He graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy. His career as a Registered Pharmacist began as the owner of the K and H Pharmacy located on Wentworth Street, then as a Pharmaceutical Representative for Winthrop Laboratories, and in retirement with Bi-Lo Pharmacy as a Pharmacist.
He was a member of Kappa Psi Pharmacy Fraternity, South Carolina Pharmacy Association, Past President of the Charleston County Pharmaceutical Association and a Life Member of the Alumni Association at the Medical University of South Carolina.
He was a life-long member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity where he served his church as altar boy, taught Sunday school, served on the Parish Council, played the Bass Violin in the church Bouzoukia Band and was the recipient of the Archangel Michael Award. A plaque was placed in his honor for his dedication in the development of Mayflower Court Park adjoining the church.
He is survived by his wife, Hamilton Rodman Kanellos. They have two sons: William Rodman Kanellos of Charleston, SC and George John Kanellos and wife, Molly Sasscer Kanellos of Upper Marlboro, MD; a brother: Constan George Kanellos and wife, Annik deGoyon Kanellos of Alexandria, VA; two grandchildren: John Hill Carter Kanellos and Anne Hamilton Dulany Kanellos.
The Wake will be from 5-7pm at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, 30 Race St. on Friday, June 3, 2011. The Trisagion Service will be at 6pm. The Funeral Service will be in the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity Saturday, June 4 at 1pm. Pallbearers will include his nephews. Burial will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The Reverend Father John L. Johns, Parish Priest will conduct the services.
