John Miles Jordan

June 6, 1940 — October 29, 2018

John Miles Jordan Jr. age 78, passed away in Charleston S.C. on October 29, 2018. He was born on June 6, 1940, in Charleston, S.C. and was the son of John M. and Frances Furman Jordan. He graduated from Charleston High School in 1958 and the College of Charleston in 1962 with a B.S. Degree in Mathematics. He also attended the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University, and the Graduate School of Bank Management at the University of Virginia.

He began his working career at the age of 12 delivering newspapers for the News and Courier. During College, he was a playground director for Hampton Park where he mentored and befriended a life long group known fondly as "the Hampton Park Boys". Upon graduation, he went to work for the Citizens and Southern National Bank of S.C. He ended his banking career 38 years later as the Regional Executive Officer for the National Bank of S.C. Shortly thereafter, he began a second career as the C.E.O. of the Medical Society of South Carolina, the majority owner of the Roper Saint Frances Healthcare System.

He was always involved in the Charleston Community and his many roles included serving as Chairman of the Board and Past Campaign Chairman of the Trident United Way, President of the Rotary Club of Charleston, as well as being the first lay Chairman of the Board of the Roper St. Francis Health Care System. He sat on numerous other boards including the Coastal Carolina Boy Scout Council, Roper St. Francis Foundation, Family Services of Charleston, Barrier Island Free Medical Clinic, Rogers and Brown Custom Brokers, College of Charleston Cougar Club, College of Charleston Foundation, College of Charleston Alumni Association, National Bank of South Carolina Local Board, Roper Mount Pleasant Hospital, Porter Gaud School and the Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community. He received the College of Charleston's Howard Rudd Business Person of the Year award, the Exchange Club of Charleston's Book of Golden Deeds award, the Synovus Financial Corporation's William B. Turner Humanitarian Award, and the Rotary International's Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was also featured in Sports Illustrated "Faces in the Crowd" as being the shortest center in college basketball while playing for the College of Charleston. He was also a member of the Carolina Yacht Club, Sea Island Yacht Club, German Friendly Society and the Country Club of Charleston.

He was also very active in The Church of the Holy Communion where he served numerous times on the Vestry including as Junior and Senior Warden. In addition, he was a member of the Finance Committee, a lay Eucharist Minister and also served as a delegate to numerous Diocese of South Carolina Conventions.

The love of his life was his wife, Mary Jenkins Jordan. The two met at a high school dance in 1956 and they married on June 9th, 1962. She was his soul mate, best friend, and moral compass. He is survived by his wife as well as his daughter, Julie Ostrover (Doug); son John Miles Jordan III (Deanna); six grandchildren: Reynolds Ostrover, Caroline Ostrover, Olivia Ostrover, Clayon Ostrover, John Jordan IV, William Price Jordan; sister Frances Hancock; brother William Jordan (Jane); brother in law Laurence Legare Jenkins (Marilyn).

The family will receive friends at the Carolina Yacht club Sunday November 4th, from 4-6pm. Funeral services to be held Monday November 5th at 1pm at the Church of the Holy Communion, 218 Ashley Avenue. Internment following at Magnolia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Second Wind Lung Transplant Association, www.2ndwind.org.
