Col. John Hardwick, US Army (Ret.)Col. John Hardwick, US Army (Ret.), husband of Betty Davis Hardwick, of Mount Pleasant, SC joined God on Monday, May 4, 2015. His Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, May 8, 2015 in Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 302 Hibben Street in the Old Village. Entombment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will greet friends in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 7, 2015.
John was born in Conway, SC on January 23, 1927, son of the late Henry B. and Daisy Hardwick. He attended Conway High School, Ole Miss and graduated from Clemson College. John served in World War II and the Korean War and was later assigned to the 420th and 360th Military Reserve Units in Columbia, SC. Having served 33 years in active and reserve units, he also attended Commanding General Staff School. John worked for Chilean Nitrate in public relations, Columbia Nitrogen Company, and Planters Fertilizer. He was also President of Commercial Bonded Storage Warehouse.
John was noted for his wonderful sense of humor, ease in making lasting relationships, his brilliant mind and love of his family. His knowledge of World War II, politics, and history were outstanding. His favorite pastimes while his health allowed were sailing and traveling. He loved adventure and traveling with family and friends. John's military flights abroad were always in his conversation. He was an active member of Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church and Mt. Pleasant Senior Center. John was introduced by a previous Mayor as the "Mayor of Hobcaw Point" and at the Senior Center as "Chairman of the Board," both affectionate terms.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Davis Hardwick of Mount Pleasant, SC; his children, Phil (T.C.) Hardwick of Awendaw, SC, Susan Rhodes (John) of Spartanburg, SC, and Brian Hardwick (Margie) of Awendaw, SC; his beloved grandchildren, Kelly Martin (Chad) of Greenville, SC, Lori Armstrong (Ryan) of Greer, SC, Johnny Rhodes of Greenville, SC, Amanda Hardwick of Awendaw, SC, Anna Hardwick of Charleston, SC, Christopher Hardwick (Courtney) of Charleston, SC, and Bradley Hardwick (Hannah) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his great-grandchildren, Addison Martin and Conner Hardwick, and Austin and Lacy Mitchum; his step-granddaughter, Karen Mitchum; and his ex-daughter-in-law, Diane Hardwick. John was much loved and respected by his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn McLaurin and his brothers, Eugene, Charlie, Carl, and Harry Hardwick.
