John K. Godwin

John K. Godwin, 44, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Julie Alexis NeSmith Godwin died Friday, March 16, 2018. His Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, March 22, 2018 in East Cooper Baptist Church, 361 Egypt Road, at 10:30 am. The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 21, 2018 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL from 6:00 until 8:00 pm.

John was born January 3, 1974 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of Kenneth Edward Godwin and Ruby Marilyn Fanning Godwin. He held both a Bachelor's of Arts in Computer Science and Master's of Science degrees in Software Engineering from the College of Charleston/The Citadel. John also earned Master's degree in Exercise Science from Georgia State University. He was a former Head Strength Coach at the College of Charleston and a nominee for the National Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Year. John was a former member of NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) and was a certified CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist). As a software engineer he was working as a Tier Four supervisor at SPAWAR and had received numerous "On the Spot" Awards recognizing his contributions toward creating fiscal and operation efficiency. John was a member of East Cooper Baptist Church and deeply involved in the children's ministry. He also supported his daughter's school and activities at Palmetto Christian Academy. He had a love of music with an adept skill of both writing songs and playing by ear on any one of his collection of guitars. John cherished the special times with his daughter Alyssa (Aly) watching, analyzing and collecting Marvel and Star Wars memorabilia. He was a humble believer and a faithful, strong and supportive husband greatly adored by his wife and daughter.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Julie Godwin and daughter Alyssa Alexis Godwin, both of Mt. Pleasant, SC; parents Ken and Marilyn Godwin of Charleston, paternal grandparents, Willis and Essie Mae Godwin of Charleston, SC; uncle & aunt, Dan and Carolyn Smith of Ehrhardt, SC; three cousins, Ric Smith of TX, Jim Smith and Kaitlyn Smith, both of Columbia, SC; father and mother-in-law, Marion J. and Patsy NeSmith of Snellville, GA, brothers and sisters-in-law Marion J NeSmith Jr and (Lynne), Darla White and (Wes Hanson), and Mike NeSmith; and his best friend, Mark Collins of Mt. Pleasant, SC. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Mary Kearse Fanning, paternal grandfather, James T. Fanning and cousin Paul Smith.
