John Lewis Gervais, Jr., of Johns Island, SC, passed away peacefully the morning of September 17, 2014 at 89 years of age. His Funeral Service will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, September, 19, 2014, in St. John's Parish Church, Johns Island. Interment, St. John's Parish Churchyard. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
John was born November 3, 1924 in Charleston, SC, son of John Lewis Gervais and Mary Alice Hart Gervais. He was a graduate of the High School of Charleston and Clemson University, Class of 1948. He served his country in World War II as a member of the 9th Army, 102nd Infantry Division. In the war, he was awarded three Purple Hearts and earned the Bronze Star. He worked for the American Bridge Company, B.L. Montague Company, and in 1989 retired after 32 years with the Pre-Stress Concrete Company. He was a member of the South Carolina Historical Society and the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. John Lewis was a member of St. John's Parish Church, Johns Island, where he served on the vestry and as senior warden numerous times.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Sams Gervais; children, Dorothy G. Carter (Bill); John L. Gervais, III (Peggy), and Perry Grant Gervais (Lynn); six grandchildren, Julia B. Carter, Louisa G.C. Staton (Evan), Jennifer B.G. Gaffney (Chris), Samuel P. Gervais, Benjamin T. Gervais and John L. Gervais, IV; sister, Mary Gervais Hills; brother, Philip E. Gervais (Julie); brother-in-law, Dr. Stephen Elliott Puckette; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Julia Gervais Puckette.
