John "Johnny" S. Garvin

On the evening of November 12, 2023, John S. Garvin was welcomed home by his Lord and Savior. He was surrounded by his loving family and his cat, Mo, by his side. He was the son of the late John I. Garvin and Thelma Perry Garvin. Johnny was born on November 15, 1939, in Walterboro, SC and grew up in the Adams Run area.

He graduated from St. Paul's High School and was an avid athlete playing football, basketball, and baseball. Upon his graduation, he was employed by Charleston Lumber/Builder's First Source where he worked for 42 years until his retirement in 2000. He was also a veteran of the Army National Guard.

He married the love of his life, JoAnn Nelson in 1964. They were blessed with two beautiful daughters and had recently celebrated their 59th Wedding Anniversary. They settled in Hollywood, SC, where Johnny served as Mayor for 4 years.

Johnny was a lifelong, die-hard fan of the Gamecocks and traveled to home and away games with the same great group of friends for over 40 years. He passed his love for the Gamecocks to his daughters and grandchildren. 

Johnny also loved spending time on the Edisto River with his family. His favorite fishing partner was his wife, who he fondly called "Pee Wee."

He is survived by his beloved wife, JoAnn; his daughters, Terri Shaw (Benny) and Andrea Frame (Darrell); and his grandchildren, Manning Shaw, Kaylan Frame, and Morgan Frame. He is also survived by his brother, Robert I Garvin (Micky) and his numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Johnny's memory to the Charleston Baptist Church or to the Charleston Animal Society.

His Funeral Service will be held Friday, November 17, 2023 in the Charleston Baptist Church at 2:00 pm, and the family will receive friends in the church beginning at 12:00 pm. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.
