John Jack Flynn

March 1, 1943 — April 12, 2018

John D. "Jack" Flynn peacefully entered into eternal rest on April 12, 2018 surrounded by his loving family after a long illness which he handled with dignity and grace. The kindest and gentlest of men, he endured Alzheimer's disease with the same good humor, sweet nature and loving spirit that marked his entire life. Miraculously, he recognized his family to the very end of the disease that robbed him of so much. Jack was born in Missoula, Montana on March 1, 1943, the eldest son of John Francis Flynn and Grace Welch Flynn and grew up in Seattle, WA.. He received his B.A in Economics from Washington State University during which time he met and married the love of his life, Frances Bayley Flynn, and received his M.B.A. from the University of Washington. Jack was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army and entered Active Duty in April 1967 and in 1968 he graduated from the U.S. Army's Aviation School Officer Fixed Wing Course at Fort Rucker, AL. He proudly served his country as Sector Pilot in Cheo Reo and Assistant Operations Officer with the 185th Reconnaissance Airplane Company Unit, headquartered at Ban Me Thuot, RVN, between June 1968 and May 1969, where he flew the Bird Dog aircraft on reconnaissance missions. Jack was honorably discharged after his service in 1970 at which time he found employment with Westvaco Corporation at the Charleston Paper Mill. He was the Human Resources Manager of the Charleston Mill from 1976 to 1996 during which time he was head of the Westvaco Rescue Squad. Jack's love of people made him a perfect fit for this work and in 1996 he was promoted to VP of Human Resources at Westvaco Corporate in Richmond, VA. He and Fran made many wonderful friends in Richmond where they lived until his retirement in 2003. Jack understood the importance of giving back to the community and was very active in Junior Achievement and the United Way. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Don and his beloved niece Julie Marie Fernandes. He is survived by his wife, his daughters Michelle Conner (Dan) of Mt. Pleasant and his daughter Krista Flynn of Richmond, VA; his grandchildren, Grady and Aisling Gross of Mt. Pleasant; his brother Joe (Dena) of Mesa, Arizona, and many other relatives and friends. As we all know, Jack Flynn loved a good party so please join us for a celebration of his life at 5:30 PM followed by a reception from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, April 18th at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road.
