Charleston, SC—John Frederick "Fred" Ettline, II, Ed.D., 82, of Charleston, SC passed to heaven on August 18, 2024. Retired from the College of Charleston, Fred taught in the undergraduate and graduate programs of the School of Education.
Dearly loved by his family, Fred was a devoted husband, father, and friend. A personable man with a quick wit, he touched many lives with kindness and love. A faith-filled Christian, he served in various capacities at Seacoast Church West Ashley. Appointed by the Governor, Fred also volunteered over 20 years on the S.C. Governor’s Juvenile Justice Advisory Council serving as State Grants Chairperson as well as National Treasurer.
An avid traveler, Fred served in leadership positions with the Wally Byam Caravan Club International and was a noted authority on Airstream travel trailer maintenance. For many years he authored a column, Phred Sez in the club magazine. His presentations at state, regional, and national meetings always drew a crowd. He and his wife Renee enjoyed extensive travel and the blessing of a marriage full of love and devotion for over 37 years.
Surviving him are his wife Renee Ettline of Charleston, SC; daughter, Karen Bloomer (Jeffery) of Edisto, SC.; sister-in-law Lisa Dodd (David), and godson, Grant Sineath, all of Charleston, SC; a son-in-law Russell Moore of White Plains, KY.; and three bonus grandchildren. Fred was son of the late Frederick Ettline and Virginia Ettline and father of the late Carolee Moore.
Fred grew up in York, PA where he was a competitive swimmer, golfer, and volleyball player in school. He earned degrees from Shippensburg State College and a doctorate from The University of Virginia.
The family wishes to acknowledge the staff of Respite Care Charleston, Ashley Gardens Dementia Care Community, Fox Rehab, and Crescent Hospice for their loving and exemplary care of Fred.

Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life at Seacoast Church West Ashley, 2049 Savannah Hwy, Charleston, SC on Monday, August 26 at 10 AM with a reception to follow at the church. A private interment will be held at Live Oak Cemetery.
