John Robert Essenberg, went to sleep peacefully forever in his own bed at home in Charleston, SC, and into the arms of his Lord and Savior on the evening of August 19,2024.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on April 6, 1933 of immigrant parents, John was a self-made man. Throughout his life he saw potential and took risks when others played it safe. He was a faithful husband to Joan for 63 years and a good father to his fourdaughters, always encouraging and providing them with wonderful opportunities. John relocated his family to Gerrards Cross, England for 10 years while he worked for AMF out of their London office, and his very full passports are lasting proof of his worldwide travel to 102 countries. One of his best life decisions was purchasing a small cottage on Mascoma Lake, New Hampshire where family and friends spent many memorable summers. This is where John and Joan began their retired life before moving south. A veteran of the US Coast Guard, John enlisted during the Korean War. John was a proud Mason for 68 years. His masonic journey began when he joined the Order of DeMolay in Brooklyn, NY, and he was raised as a Master Mason in 1954. He was an active Mason and later Shriner in a number of states and very much enjoyed the company of his Brothers and Nobles. John’s final wish was that he wanted to be remembered as “I always did it my way!” and he will.
John will be interred in the family plot at Oak Grove Cemetery in Enfield, NH on October 12, 2024. A private celebration of his life will follow.
In lieu of flowers, if you wish please send a donation to the John R. Essenberg memorial funds at: Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 3075 Bees Ferry Road, Charleston, SC 29414 or Enfield Community Lutheran Church, 96 Main Street, Enfield, NH 03748.
