John Matthew DuPree, Jr., 89, of Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina, beloved husband of 64 years to Mina Philipps DuPree, entered into eternal rest on Monday, April 20, 2026, at home surrounded by his loving family. The family will receive friends Sunday, April 26, 2026, at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, 30 Race Street, Charleston, SC from 4:00pm until 6:00 pm. His funeral service will be held Monday, April 27, 2026, in the church at 12:30 pm, and burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc.
Johnny was born January 21, 1937, in Charleston, SC, son of the late John Matthew DuPree, Sr. and Odessa Barrineau DuPree. Known to many as “Captain Johnny”, he devoted more than fifty years of service to the Charleston shipping industry and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Longshoremen Association Locals 1422 and 1771. He was a hardworking and respected man whose quick wit, colorful stories, and sense of humor brought joy to those around him. Above all else, Johnny loved his family and took great pride in caring for and guiding those he loved.
In addition to his wife, Johnny is survived by his sons, Pano Michael DuPree of Folly Beach, SC, Gregory Mark DuPree (Aimee) of James Island, SC, and Sherry DuPree of Johns Island, SC, his grandchildren, Megan DuPree Andreas (Brian), Jessica Ann DuPree, Aubry DuPree, Alexis DuPree, John Michael DuPree, and James DuPree, his great grandchildren, Tripp Andreas and Emma Andreas; and his brother Timothy DuPree of Mount Pleasant, SC.
In addition to his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by his son, John Christopher DuPree.
Memorial donations may be made in Johnny’s memory to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity.
