John Wesley Dixon, 92, of North Charleston, South Carolina, husband of the late Joanne Anctil Dixon, passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2014. His Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTH AREA CHAPEL, 2119 Dorchester Road. Interment with military honors will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral chapel on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Dixon will be Douglas Dixon, Michael Dixon, Joey Dixon, Brian Dixon, Charles Dixon and Nicholas Long.
Mr. Dixon was born August 4, 1922 in Ochlocknee, Georgia, son of the late Joseph Iowa Dixon and Ethel Zadia Carter Dixon. During his lifetime, he was a 70 year member of the NY Masonic Lodge #1118, and was a Journeyman Silversmith and Journeyman Metal Spinner. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served his country during World War II. Mr. Dixon was employed at the NY City Coast Guard Station, Brooklyn Shipyard, and the Charleston Naval Shipyard. In his retirement years, he enjoyed working on his lawnmowers.
He was an active supporter of the Island Cadet Corps and the Regimental Cadets Drum & Bugle Corp of Staten Island, NY and Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights Drum and Bugle Corp of Newark, NJ. He was a member of the Whipper Barony Neighborhood Association, The Charleston Rifle Club and attended Pittman Street Baptist Church. He enjoyed traveling to Murphy, NC and climbing the 300 steps to the top at Fields of the Woods Bible Park.
Mr. Dixon is survived by his two sons, John W. Dixon, Jr. (Janet) of Prince Frederick, MD and Wesley C. Dixon of Bowie, MD; his daughter, Charlene D. Blocker (Jeff) of Palm Harbor, FL; eight grandchildren: twelve great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; his brother, Joseph T. Dixon of James Island, SC; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Joanne Anctil Dixon; his step-mother, Priscilla Ricks Massey Dixon; his sisters, Annie Laura Dixon Chastain, Eva Dixon Smith and Jewel Dixon; his infant brothers, Wallace Dixon and Ardis Dixon; his half-brother, Jack Ivy Dixon; his step-brothers, David Massey, Amos Massey and Felton Massey; his step-sisters, Nita Massey Croft and Katherine Massey; and his great-granddaughter, Kimberly Dixon.
