John McKinley Cooke

John McKinley Cooke, 75, a shipping executive of Mount Pleasant, SC, and husband of Joanne Palm Cooke, passed away peacefully Friday, March 21, 2014. His memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 25, 2014 in St. Andrews Church, 440 Whilden Street, Mt. Pleasant, at 11:00 am. Interment will be private. The family will receive visitors at their home on Monday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. ARRANGEMENTS BY J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
John Cooke, Sr. was born on August 13, 1938 in New York City. He was raised in Manhasset, NY. He graduated from Manhasset High School and received his college degree from Hofstra University. John moved to Fernandina Beach, Florida in 1962 where we worked as an apprentice harbor pilot and as a steamship agent. It was in Florida where he met and married his wife. In 1964 John and Joanne moved to Charleston, where he opened Smith and Kelly Steamship Agency. He remained a fixture on the Charleston waterfront for over 40 years. He was past president of the Charleston Propeller Club and an officer of the Charleston Maritime Association.
When not on the waterfront, John dedicated much of his time to East Cooper School, youth sailing programs, and the Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as a Captain.
John is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Joanne, his children Joellyn Summerall (Charles) and John Cooke, Jr (Jillian), grandchildren (to whom he was affectionately known as "Pop") Narni and Penelope Summerall, and Caillin Cooke, cousin John Burrows and nephew Harvey Cooke, III. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Mallory Cooke and Gladys McKinley Burrows, and his brother Harvey Mallory Cooke, Jr.
The family would like to thank the numerous friends, nurses, doctors and The Hospice of Charleston, who made his final journey more comfortable.
