Joanne "Jody" Thomas-Hackney, 68, of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed from life on this Earth on March 13, 2014 at Hospice House of Mt. Pleasant. She was diagnosed with liver cancer September 15, 2013 and chose Hospice of Charleston to help manage her care. A memorial service to celebrate Jody's life will be held at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel on Friday March 21, 2014 at 6:00 PM.
Jody was preceded in death by her parents Frances and Albert Stangebye of Orange, CA and her first husband Frank A. Thomas of Loreto, Baja Mexico. Her marriage to Frank was blessed with her only child and best friend, Christine Siri Thomas. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 25 years Dr. Claud "Tim" Timmons Hackney of Sullivan's Island, SC, who adopted and lovingly helped to raise her daughter Siri as his own.
Jody was born October 12, 1945 in San Diego, CA and was adopted at 2 months of age. She was a graduate of California State College of Fullerton, Georgia State University of Atlanta and Emory University Regional Training Center of Atlanta. Jody's 42 year career as a Registered Nurse was varied and included service as a coronary care nurse at LA County General Hospital, the Director of Pulmonary Therapy at Arlington Heights Hospital in the Chicago area, a registered nurse at The Florence Crittenden Home in Charleston, and a private duty nurse for special needs patients.
During her lifetime Jody was a Vista Volunteer in Service to America, a medical needs volunteer for Grady Homes Low Income Housing, and a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in Mt. Pleasant. She has always been a generous supporter of civic organizations, the Arts, Animal Rights and helping to fund Crisis Relief efforts.
Throughout life Jody was an avid reader and gardener. After retiring from her nursing career she enjoyed cruising with friends and family as well as painting and crafting.
After her diagnosis in September, Jody was surrounded by countless loving friends, family and neighbors who filled her remaining months with joy and laughter. Life with Jody was characterized by humor, love, compassion and general fun in superfluous abundances.
She is survived by her daughter Christine Siri Thomas of Mills River, NC, her sister-in-law Betsy Holman and husband John of Albany, GA, nephews Clint Holman of St. Thomas, VI and Will Holman of Hidden Valley Lake, CA. She also has numerous cousins in California.
She will be returned to nature in her two beloved homes-the Intracoastal Waterway and the mountains of North Carolina. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Charleston, 4975 Lacross Rd, Suite 200, N. Charleston, SC 29406 and American Cancer Society, 269 Calhoun St, Charleston, SC 29401.
