Joan Winter Roth, 91, of Mount Pleasant, SC, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, October 8, 2026. Her graveside funeral service will be held Sunday, October 11, 2026 at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens at 12:00 pm. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Joan was born October 16, 1934 in Brooklyn, NY, beloved daughter of the late Louis and Faye Winter. Joan was an exceptional woman - deeply loving, endlessly kind, and truly special in every way. The warmth of her spirit touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She was the kind of person people didn’t just meet - they remembered.
She graduated with honors from the very first class of Rivers High School in Charleston, SC, proving from the start that her dedication and drive were matched only by her heart.
As a young woman, Joan threw herself into service through the USO, becoming an active presence and serving as a USO hostess for many years. She brought comfort, encouragement, and genuine hospitality - making a difference in the lives of so many. Her commitment to the United States Navy was extraordinary and lifelong. She began her 62-year career as a GS2 supply clerk, and through determination and skill, she rose step by step - eventually reaching GS14 as a financial systems analyst in Crystal City, VA.
After retiring from government service in 1993, she returned to Charleston, ready for the next chapter. But retirement didn’t slow her down. She later worked as a consultant for the Department of the Navy, serving with the same dedication until she finally retired at age 82.
Joan’s life was a testament to love, loyalty, and service. Her legacy lives on in the hearts she touched and the communities she strengthened.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Pamela Leonard; devoted granddaughter, Lauren Moore; sister, Marcia Klein; nephews & nieces, Barry (Deb) Lash, Ira (Teri) Lash, Lori (Lenny) Samuels, Stuart (Samara) Klein, and Rob Axelrod; and many great and great-great nephews and nieces.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her sister, Lila Lash; and brother-in-law, Alex Lash.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Chabad of Charleston, Center for Jewish Life, 477 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
