Joan Carolyn Maxwell, 77, of Johns Island, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Thursday, September 12, 2024. Her Cryptside Service will be held Thursday, September 19, 2024 in the Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Road at 11:00 am. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel.
Joan was a fifth generation Charlestonian who attended River’s High School, graduated from the College of Charleston with her Master’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, where she was Captain of the College basketball team. Throughout her career, Joan served as a medical laboratory manager in the Charleston area as well as on the West Coast, where she became a devout fan of the Seattle Seahawks’ football team.
Joan raised 4 children of her own but was known as “Mom” to many of her children’s friends. Joan never knew a stranger, and always found a way to help someone in need. She had a love for animals and took in many different kinds over the years. Her potbellied pigs, “Wilma” and “Rambo” and her daughter, Joni’s pet “Duck-A-Luck” held an extra special place in the family.
Joan was residing in her Johns Island home with her youngest surviving daughter, Joni.
She was preceded in death by her father, Louis A. R. Nelson Sr., her mother, Edna M Nelson, her three brothers, L A Rohde Nelson Jr., Lars Rhame Nelson, Ronald N Nelson; her daughter, Frances “Christina” Lee; her son, Clinton John Maxell II.
Joan is survived by her daughters Jill Carmen Maxwell Douglas (Thomas) of Summerville, SC and Joni Leigh Maxwell of Johns Island, SC; five grandchildren; Kristen Cameron Zeiss (Matt), John Kevin Lee “Jr.” (Kenzie), Thomas “Oliver” Douglas, Julia Alexandra Douglas, and Caelen Mathew Douglas; and five great grandchildren.
