Joan Weisblum Steinberg Loeb, 98, of Charleston, SC, first married to the late Matthew Steinberg, M.D. and widow of B. Frank Loeb, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 12, 2016, in her home. Her funeral service will be held at the graveside Tuesday, June 14, 2016, in Emanu-El Cemetery "Maryville", Sycamore Avenue, at 10:30 a.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Joan was born April 15, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York, the first of three daughters of the late Philip and Elsie Aleskowitz Weisblum. She was happily married to Dr. Matthew Steinberg of Charleston from 1936 until his death in September 1968.
In the 1940's, she worked as a volunteer with the Army Air Corps in the aircraft warning program, and as a Grey Lady with the Red Cross. During her life, she served as president of the Charleston Chapter of Hadassah, vice president of the Charleston section of The Council of Jewish Women, and president of the Sisterhood of Synagogue Emanu-El. She was one of the founding members of the synagogue. She was on the boards of the Blind Association of Charleston, the Charleston Community Concert Association, and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.
In 1971, she married B. Frank Loeb of Montgomery, AL and resided there until 2001. She was an active member of Montgomery's Temple Beth-Or.
She is survived by daughter, Lucia Ellis, LCSW (Elizabeth Carrington) of Atlanta, GA; two sons: Robert M. Steinberg, M.D. (Hon. Ellen) of Charleston, SC, and David A. Steinberg of Charleston, SC; grandchildren: Sarah E. Steinberg of Birmingham, AL, and Matthew P. Steinberg of Atlanta, GA; sister, Margery Rubin (George) of Medford, NJ; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and caregivers.
