Joan Livingston Holling, widow of Robert Hart Holling, died in the afternoon of July 9, 2025. She was the daughter of the late Thelma Wilson and James Smith Livingston. She was born in Newberry, SC on June 10, 1939. Her Funeral Service will be held Sunday, July 20, 2025, in St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 405 King Street, at 12:00 pm, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. The family will receive friends Saturday, July 19, 2025, in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel, from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm. Private burial will be at a later date in Bethany Cemetery.
Joan grew up in Moncks Corner, SC and graduated from Berkeley High School in 1957 and Winthrop College in 1961. She taught in the Charleston County School District - first at St. Andrews Junior High and later at Ft. Johnson Middle School.
She was a member of St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Women of the ELCA, and served on the Congregation Council, the Altar Guild and the Archives Committee. She was a member of the Alpha Rho Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and retired after teaching 28 years for the Charleston County School District.
She is survived by her son, Robert Hart Holling, Jr. and his wife Robin Honan of Cape Elizabeth, ME, her daughter Julie Wilson Holling of Gaston, SC, her grandsons Harrison James Holling & Alexander Louis Holling. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Nichols Livingston of Gainesville, GA, her nieces Jane Livingston Carpenter (Cris), Leigh Livingston Wallace (Sam), Laura Holling Kaplan (Steve), & Robin Griffin Richardson and nephews, Archibald B. “Bucky” Holling III (Carla) & Charles E. “Charlie” Griffin (Maureen) and great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents and her brother, James Wilson Livingston, her brother-in-law, Archibald Baker “Tunkie” Holling, Jr., her sister-in-law, Sue Walker Holling, her sister-in-law, Ann Holling Griffin, and her brother-in-law, George E. Griffin.
