Joan Elizabeth Johnston Harrison, 83, long-time resident of Winnsboro SC, entered into eternal rest April 21, 2013 after an extended illness in Charleston SC. She was the widow of John Perrin Harrison, son of the late Wade C. Harrison and "Dolly" Hughey Harrison. A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Horeb Church Cemetery, Bradley SC, at 2 pm. The family will receive friends at Millway Plantation, Bradley SC, on the day of the service from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Arrangements are by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL AND BLYTH FUNERAL HOME, GREENWOOD, SC.
Joan was born December 22, 1929 in Brooklyn NY, daughter of Arthur Lester Johnston and Elizabeth Bruns Johnston, and grew up in the Hudson River Valley. She was a graduate of Marjorie Webster College in Washington DC. Joan worked as a radio script writer in New York City in the early 1950s, where she met her husband John, a textile engineer from South Carolina. She was a long-time member of the Anemone Garden Club, Winnsboro Woman's Club, VFW Auxiliary, and was a Charter Member of the Fairfield Historical Society. Joan was regionally known as a watercolor artist in upstate South Carolina and frequently painted the vanishing landscapes and objects of the rural South. Her extensive artist's library was recently donated to Charleston County School of the Arts.
She is survived by her two daughters, Joanne H. (Aubry) Alexander of Charleston SC, Sarah Tarrant Harrison of Asheville NC, and a grandson, Wade Cothran Alexander, a freshman at Clemson University.
