Joan Parker "Jo" Flint left this world on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 to be with our Heavenly Father. She will be sorely missed by her family, but the knowledge that she is at peace without any further pain brings joy in the midst of sorrow. Jo was born in Pittsburgh, PA March 20, 1923. She grew up in Hamilton, OH with a special fondness for her grandfather and grandmother Brown who helped raise her to be a most beautiful and loving person. She attended William and Mary College where she graduated with a BS in Psychology and developed many lifelong friendships, the most important of which was her husband of 67 years, John. John was a Naval Officer stationed in Yorktown, VA during the war. In search of companionship at William and Mary with his fellow officers, he was swept off his feet by one of the most beautiful girls on campus, Jo Parker. Their's has been a romance for the ages as John still carries a picture in his wallet of Jo in her college years together with a fortune cookie message "Your mate in life will bring you luck and be your guiding star." Their love for one another over so many years has been an inspiration to all of us.
Jo is survived by her husband John, her daughter Debbie, her son-in-law, Bucky, her son Hank, her daughter-in-law Anne, her seven grandchildren, Peter, Hunter, Tait, Alden, Sarah, Katherine and Alice and her two great grandchildren Katie and Ellie. Her grandchildren know her as their special "Nana" who loved them unconditionally and encouraged each of them uniquely without reservation or judgment. They will miss her in the here and now but always carry her in their hearts. Her daughter and son, Debbie and Hank, will remember the deep investment she made in them as a Mom. She was always there through thick and thinn to make sure we had all the things we needed to leave the nest and make it out there in the real world. When it came to raising her children, her legacy was sacrifice. We'll miss you Mom but a part of you will carry on in us forever.
Finally, Jo was a friend to so many. A close friend said of her passing, "This is the end of an era." If so, we pray that it will also be the beginning of an era: an era marked by the same kind of sacrificial love and investment in others that marked the life of Jo Flint.
The family would like to thank the caregivers that have meant so much to Jo in her last days including: Julia A., Karen, Lisa, Aasha and Tiffany.
Memorials may be made to First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC, 29401 or to Roper-St. Francis Hospice, 1483 Tobias Gadson Blvd., Ste. 208-A, Charleston, SC 29407.
Her funeral service at the graveside will be private.
