Joan Meredith Cunningham

Joan "Mimi" Severance Cunningham, 88, of James Island, South Carolina entered into eternal rest on Saturday, January 8, 2022.

Joan was born January 4, 1934 in Florence, South Carolina, to the late John McIver Severance and the late Meredith Brooks Severance.

Joan attended Rivers High School in Charleston and went on to pursue her bachelor's degree at Columbia College and later graduated from the College of Charleston. She taught school for many years and then went into real estate in Charleston.

Joan was a proud member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church where she served on church council and a variety of other committees. She had a passion for helping others. Joan was involved with Ronald McDonald house, Tri-County Family Ministries, and other local organizations. She was also a devoted friend to many and would do anything for the ones she loved.

Joan loved the game of golf, College of Charleston basketball, and spending time with her friends and family. Her family was the most important thing in her life.

Joan is survived by her son, Clay Cunningham (Carla) of Awendaw, SC; brother, John M. Severance Jr. (Betty) of Columbia, SC; grandchildren: Mandy Brown, Brittan, Logan, Jonah & Beckham Miller, Brooks Cunningham, Anna Anderson (Will), Jeff (Ashley) and Sarah Orberson; along with 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 60 years, Robert "Bob" Cunningham; her daughter, Meredith "Meri" Miller; and half-brother, Robert "Bob" Mace (Shirley).

A visitation and memorial service will be held January 12, 2022 in J. Henry Stuhr's Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun St, Charleston, SC 29403. The visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the memorial service will begin at 1:00 p.m. You may view the service via live stream at https://youtu.be/HlAfcQPuRWU. Following the service, the funeral will proceed to Holy Cross Cemetery on James Island for interment.
