Joan Cauthen Bamberg, 94, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of the late George Hammond Bamberg, Jr., entered eternal rest Thursday, December 24, 2020. Her Graveside Service will be held Monday, December 28, 2020 in Magnolia Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Joan was born July 14, 1926 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, daughter of the late Thomas Anderson Cauthen and Sarah Covington Cauthen. She attended Limestone College and transferred to the College of Charleston where she joined Chi Omega Sorority and she graduated with a Degree in Chemistry. Joan began playing golf at age 14 and played for 75 years until she was 89. Joan and Hammond shared this love for the game and played at the Country Club of Charleston, the Profile Club in NH and anywhere they traveled.
Joan's first job was a chemist at Westvaco until having children. She then worked part time as the assistant to the President of the Alumni Office at the Medical College of SC. She became the bookkeeper and Secretary/Treasurer for Charleston Office Supply Co.
Joan enjoyed playing bridge and going on long walks. She was a member of St. Philips Church where she enjoyed being on the Alter Guild for many years. Once moving to Bishop Gadsden, she served as a reader at the Sunday Morning Services.
She is survived by her son, G. Hammond Bamberg III (Helen) of Awendaw, SC; two daughters, Betsy Bamberg, and Terri Bamberg, both of Mt. Pleasant, SC: six grandchildren, Shay Bamberg, Katie Carter (Marcus), Lawrence Collins (Sarah), Lisa Sharpe (Bill), Sarah Gambrell and Charles Gambrell and four great grandchildren, Jackson, Elizabeth, Riggs, and Mary Hammond.
