Joan Rosenthal Berlinsky

December 30, 1931 — September 19, 2018

Joan Rosenthal Berlinsky, 86, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Melvyn Berlinsky entered into eternal rest Wednesday, September 19, 2018. Her Graveside Service will be held Friday, September 21, 2018 in Emanu-El Cemetery (Maryville), Sycamore Avenue at 10:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at 346 Confederate Circle, Charleston from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Joan was born December 30, 1931 in Washington, District of Columbia and raised in Augusta, Georgia, daughter of the late Albert J. Rosenthal, Sr. and Theresa Steinberg Rosenthal. She was a graduate of the University of Georgia where she earned her Bachelor's of Science Degree in the College of Agriculture. She was a longtime member of Synagogue Emanu-El, it's Sisterhood, Hadassah, and the Charleston Jewish Federation. She was a member of the Garden Club of Charleston, the Garden Club of South Windermere, and the Medical University of South Carolina Women's Club.

Joan was instrumental in encouraging the General Assembly of South Carolina to recognize state agencies and public organizations whose mission is to keep the cities and state free of litter and debris.

Joan was active in many civic programs and projects, including: Charleston's Gateway Walk, West Ashley Greenway, City of Charleston Department of Parks, Medical University of South Carolina Urban Farm, and Red Cross Blood Donor. She was Appointed to Medical University of South Carolina Board of Visitors.

She is survived by three Sons: Bruce A. Berlinsky of Charleston, SC, Fred S. Berlinsky (Shelli) of Cherry Hill, NJ and Lee E. Berlinsky (Claire) of Charleston, SC; brother, Al Rosenthal (Alice) of Atlanta, GA; sister, Anita R. Yudin of Dallas, TX; and seven grandchildren: Harris, Drew, Tyler, Alex, Ryan, Niki and Jack.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Stanley Rosenthal.
