Jerlyn Ann Bain Hutto, (88), of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, wife of Edward Larry “Babe” Hutto entered into eternal rest peacefully on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.
Jerlyn “Gerri” was born on March 15,1936 in Whitmire, South Carolina, daughter of the late Lloyd Winston Bain and the late Nannie Sims Bain. A 1958 graduate of Winthrop University, Gerri started her career as a High School teacher in Columbia South Carolina at Eau Claire High School. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Larry “Babe” Hutto on a blind date at a Citadel Party. Babe was finishing his last year at The Citadel. They were married in 1962, and they started their life together in Hampton SC. She and Babe raised their three children in Hampton, South Carolina where she was an active member of Hampton United Methodist Church, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Bridge Club and the Hampton County School District Board. She was a passionate seamstress and made many of her children’s and grandchildren’s clothes and was known as the neighborhood alteration expert. Her husband often bragged about her sewing ability and said she was so good at sewing that she could thread a needle while the machine was still running as the needle was going up and down. She was also an avid gardener and loved working in her yard. After several years of teaching business classes at Wade Hampton High School, Gerri decided it was time to go into business for herself. She was quite the entrepreneur as she started her own Court Reporting Business and worked in that field until she retired.
Gerri was most happy enjoying weekends with her family at Edisto Beach. After many wonderful years in Hampton, she and Babe decided to retire and live out the best years of their lives at Edisto Beach. At Edisto, Gerri was an active member of Edisto Island United Methodist, The King Daughters Club, and Edisto Island Yacht Club. She loved to entertain friends and family and was known to be able to throw quite a shindig. She grew a passion for traveling and discovered hiking to be one of her favorite pastimes while traveling abroad.
Five years ago she and Babe moved to Mount Pleasant and resided at Franke at Seaside. Once in Mount Pleasant they enjoyed being members of Hibben United Methodist. They appreciated being residents at Franke and meeting many new friends. Gerri loved hosting Happy Hour on her porch weekly.
Gerri adored her family. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was affectionately known as GiGi, which when asked what GiGi stood for she would proudly say “Gorgeous Grandma”.
Her family is most grateful for all the loving care and attention Gerri received from caregivers at Franke at Seaside, Mt. Pleasant Gardens Memory Care, Roper Hospital, Lutheran Hospice, and Be Well Home Services.
Gerri is survived by three children, Paige Hutto - Hall (Tommy); Kelly Hutto Hurley (Noel); Edward Larry Hutto, Jr. (Aubrey); Eight grandchildren: Cameron Monteith Hemphill, Heyward Stiles Monteith, Caroline Marion Monteith, Noel McKay Hurley III, Anna Trogdon Hurley, Susan Chandler Hutto, Jordan Bain Hutto, Edward Larry Hutto III and one great grandchild: Bain Dantzler Hemphill.
She is predeceased by her three brothers: Kenneth Edwin Bain of Spartanburg, SC, Gene Robert Bain of Whitmire, SC and James Howard Bain of Atlanta, GA.
