Jeanette Barfield Whatley, 76, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 6, 2012, in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
Jeanette was born on September 6, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Olga Palko Barfield and the late Clarence F. Barfield. She moved to Crowell, Georgia, at the age of 16 where she graduated from Reynolds High School in 1953. After high school, she married Cliff Whatley and eventually moved to Allendale, South Carolina, where they raised their three boys. While in Allendale, she was an active member of Swallow Savannah Methodist Church where she played the organ. Jeanette was the bookkeeper in the family automotive business from 1965 until 1997. After retirement, she and her husband moved to Hilton Head Island where they were active members of First Baptist Church. She was a part of the hand bell choir and an active volunteer for many years. Jeanette was a loving and devoted wife, daughter, mother, sister, mother-in-law, and grandmother. She was loved and adored by her entire family.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Cliff Whatley of Mount Pleasant; her mother, Olga P. Barfield of Mount Pleasant; sons Dennis (Lisa) of Anderson; David (Robyn) of Mount Pleasant; and Paul (Kea) of Mount Pleasant; and eight grandchildren: Caroline, Samuel, Lillian, Lauren, Glenn, Rachel, Harrison, and Wallace Ann. She was preceded in death by her father, and sister, Carolyn Barfield Cutcliff.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 3:00 on Tuesday, July 10, at First Baptist Church, 100 South Forest Beach Drive on Hilton Head Island. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the First Baptist Church Family Life Center. Local arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
