Jean Herndon Smith – Jean Herndon Smith, 85, passed away on January 31, 2012. Mrs. Smith was born August 3, 1926, near Soperton, Georgia, the daughter of the late James Hubert Herndon and Inez Price Herndon. She retired as Business Manager of the Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing in 1988 and devoted herself to her grandchildren, Lindsey Vanous Decatur and Jesse Bridges Vanous, whom she adored. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Mount Pleasant. She enjoyed quilting, reading and entertaining; her table always had room for more guests.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by parents; her brothers, Wilson Herndon, Willard Herndon, James Herndon and Bobby Herndon; her sisters, Pauline Medlin, Peggy Davis and Betty Perry. Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Leigh Smith and Dwight Burke of Mount Pleasant and Kimberly Vanous and Michael Steves of Stafford, Virginia; her sister, Grace Shadburn of Macon, Georgia; her grandchildren, Lindsey and Jesse; several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to acknowledge the following who lovingly and tenderly cared for her in the last years of her life: Respite Ministries, the staff of the both the Memory Care and Skilled Nursing Units at Franke at Seaside, the staff at Sandpiper Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Hospice of Charleston and, especially, Dr. David Bachman of the Medical University of South Carolina, whose expertise and kindness helped her maintain her sense of humor, her personality and her amazing resilience throughout a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
The relatives and friends of Jean Smith are invited to attend her Funeral Service on Saturday, February 4, 2012 in J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 4:00 pm. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends at the Mt. Pleasant Chapel after the service.
