Jean Simpson Ferguson
Fulghum
May 11, 1931 – April 18, 2026
Mount Pleasant Chapel
5:00 - 7:00 pm (Eastern time)
Jean Simpson Ferguson Fulghum, 94, passed away peacefully at home on April 18, 2026. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit and loving heart, offering kindness and encouragement to all she encountered. Jean lived a life marked by compassion, strength, grace, and a deep devotion to her family.
Jean was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and was the daughter of the late Carrie Elilious Simpson Feguson and Lonnie Greene Ferguson. She was preceded in death by her three sisters and brother, Thelma Ferguson Callihan (Wilber), Mary Alice Ferguson Collins (Roy), Louise Ferguson Teasley, and Lonnie Greene Ferguson, Jr. (Dorothy).
Jean graduated from Furman University in December 1952 and shortly thereafter married the love of her life, Leonard Chesley Fulghum, Jr., in February 1953 at The Citadel Summerall Chapel. Every year on their anniversary, they revisited the Chapel. Their devotion was a testament to an enduring love that lasted for 72 years of their lives together, until Leonard’s death in 2025.
She and her husband were active participants in and supporters of numerous organizations in the Charleston community. They were members of the First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, Charleston, later joining the Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church.
Her greatest joy was her family, whom she loved deeply and faithfully. Jean and Leonard were proud parents of three children: Leonard C. “Len” Fulghum, III, who is deceased; Kenneth Scott “Ken” Fulghum (Karen); and Elizabeth “Beth” Fulghum Hayes (Michael). Their four grandchildren are: Virginia F. Lott (Judson); Leonard Chesley “Ches” Fulghum, IV; Jean Fulghum Kiphart (John); and Jennings Kerr “Jake” Owens, and four great-grandchildren: Ellis Marguerite Lott, Gentry Grice Lott, John Scott Kiphart, and Edith Simpson Kiphart.
Her family members will forever treasure Jean’s wisdom, her wonderful sense of humor, and her unwavering love, and they take comfort in knowing she lived a long, meaningful life marked by kindness, generosity, and a constant sense of caring. Her loving nature quietly shaped the lives of those around her, leaving behind cherished memories that will never fade.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who supported Jean during her illness - especially Ms. Celeste Martindale, Reverend Cynthia E. Smalls, Sister Brenda Scott, Sister Kia Brown, Sister Cynthia Rivers, Ms. Joy Brown, and Ms. Timmona Wright.
Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel. Visitation will be held at the Mount Pleasant Chapel on Thursday, April 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be held privately.
