Jean Affleck

October 26, 1935 — September 19, 2019

Rosamond Jean Affleck Charleston Born October 26, 1935 in Ringos, New Jersey, she helped with the chickens and rode horses, a love that continued her whole life. Being outside Princeton, Albert Einstein would sometimes carry her books as a young school girl. She did research for the Gallup Group, Her research efforts were mentioned in published books on Economics . She went to Swathmore, graduating in 1957. She worked with others in the Solebury Quaker meeting, as well as Bayard Rutin and the Pearl Buck Foundation, to bring 123 Vietnamese-American children to the US, where they became the first legal international adoption. Married to Tony Asch, she was active in the Philadelphia Folk festival, entertaining the likes of Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Joan Baez and others. They had 4 children and many foster children, divorcing in 1970.She married Jerry Lowe in 1970 and eventually move to BC, Canada, where she gave birth to another daughter in 1974. In 1981 she moved to Goleta, CA with her youngest daughter.
While there she visited the nearby village of Isla Vista where she was an advocate for homeless people and helped many recover from alcohol and addiction and get a new start in life. She also helped start a non denominational church for homeless people.She was a writer and copy editor for Vista, a newsmagazine for the Isla Vista community. She was also a copy editor for Center Page a newsmagazine for the 12 step community. In Charleston she was one of the editors for two news web sites, The Charleston Daily News and Charleston News Alternative.
She is survived by her husband Bryan Harrison, her 5 children and 5 grandchildren.
