Janice Bozart Smith

With grieving hearts and bittersweet emotions, we announce the passing of Janice Bozart (a/k/a Bozardt) Smith of Charleston, SC at the age of 85. Our dedicated, generous, and stately family matriarch laid down her years-long battle against dementia on February 14, 2025.

2 Timothy 4:7.

Matthew 25:23.

Native of Garner, NC, she is survived by her adoring daughter, Kimberly Smith of Charleston, SC and granddaughter, Charlotte Beck, and her husband, Andrew Beck, of Summerville, SC.

Jan is survived also by her loving brother-in-law, Charles (Carolyn) Hodges and nephew, Bill (Renee) Hodges all of Charlotte, NC and their children; as well as by members of her “second” family whom she cherished: Steve (Kat) Varn, Cathy (Craig) Stamey and Franklin (Josephine) Deas all of Charleston, SC, and Patty (Brittain) Moose of Charlotte, NC.

Janice was predeceased by her parents, Benton and Roselle Bozart (a/k/a Bozard & Bozardt) of Cordova/Orangeburg, SC & Garner, NC; sister, Rose Marie “Rosie” Hodges of Charlotte, NC; and brothers Frederick “Freddy” Bozart of Norfolk, VA, Robert “Bobby” (Perry Batton) Bozart of Raleigh, NC and Benton “Bennie” (Gloria) Bozart of Garner, NC.

A Garner High School basketball champion, Janice thoroughly enjoyed watching Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors. She was also an avid PGA spectator. Janice relished time in her garden, especially tending her spectacular roses. For more than 30 years, Janice was a proud member of Ashley River Baptist Church in Charleston, SC. Incredibly, for 60+ years she was the office manager for Varn Realty (formerly Varn & Hurtes) having begun her career there at age 18!

A stalwart supporter, Mom was the foundational love of my life and consistent encouraging force for good.

Philippians 4:8.

I will carry her tenacity and regal spirit in my heart always, even as I miss her presence every day.

Philippians 1:3.

Sincere appreciation for MUSC’s Dr. E. B. Clyburn, MD and so many of the staff at Harmony at West Ashley for their years of support and kindness. Special gratitude also to Crescent Hospice for their gentle guidance and compassion.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to donate to a favorite charity in her memory.

Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.
