Janice Weinstein Kahn

Janice Weinstein Kahn, 87, died Friday, July 11, 2025. She was born in Shreveport, LA, December 24, 1937, the daughter of Norma Levy Weinstein and Israel Weinstein.

Her funeral services will be graveside at Brith Sholom Beth Israel Cemetery, on Sycamore Avenue, on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel.

Mrs. Kahn is survived by her husband, Ellis I. Kahn, whom she married August 11, 1963, and her children: Justin Simon Kahn (Mitzi), David Israel Kahn (Celeste) and Cynthia Anne Kahn Nirenblatt (Bradley), as well as her grandchildren: Sarah, Gracen, Rebecca, Ellen, Benjamin, Daniel and Anna. Her brothers, Boris Weinstein, Ph.D. and Lewis Weinstein, Esq. predeceased her.

She graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in 1955 and the University of Alabama, with a BS in Bacteriology & Chemistry in 1959. She also studied and graduated as a Medical Technologist, MTASCP, from Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA in 1960 and as a para-legal from the Trident Technical Education Center, magna cum laude.

While in high school, she was the Louisiana Debate champion in 1955.

At the University of Alabama, She was a member of Alpha Rho Chapter of Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority, where she was social chairman, scholastic chairman and assistant treasurer. She was president of Tau Kappa Alpha and regional secretary-treasurer and vice-president of the Chemistry School, membership chairman of the Pasteur Society, a member of the Cotillion Club and Triangle. She was also a member of Hillel and the student newspaper, Coed of the Week.

Active in the University of Alabama Debate Team, she was on the Debate Council and she won several debate awards, including Outstanding Award, Individual Debate Awards and the Individual Events Superior Award.

She was honored to be selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges in 1959.

While in high school, she worked for Newspaper Production Company in Shreveport. She worked as a medical technologist for Charity Hospital in New Orleans, St. Paul’s Hospital in Dallas, TX, 3565th USAF Hospital at James Connally AFB, TX, Charleston VA Medical Center and Drs. Coleman, Ellison & DeMassi.

While at Charity Hospital, she did professional research and a presentation on Atypical Acid Fast Organisms in 1962.

Later, she was certified by the Arts & History Commission of the City of Charleston in 1973 and was a co-founder of Associated Guides of Historic Charleston. She worked as a Registered Historic Guide and lectured to various groups until she retired. For the City of Charleston, she had been an active member of several committees: the Mayor’s Commission of Tourism, Tourism Management Study Committee, Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee and the Convention & Visitors Bureau.

She was interviewed on CNN regarding Historic Charleston following Hurricane Hugo and her extensive interview regarding Historic Charleston and her “Chai Y’all Tours” was published in Southern Living Magazine.

She had been President of the Charleston Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women and was a life member. She had been President of the Sisterhood of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Synagogue, a founding member of the South Carolina Jewish Historical Society and a life member of Hadassah. She had also been a Lion of Judah with the Charleston Jewish Federation.

She was a Bronze Life Master in Bridge and was proud to be a Co-Founder, with Ellis, in the Janice & Ellis Kahn Endowment Fund for Jewish Education and Preservation of Jewish Historical Sites, the Ellis I. Kahn, ’58 Scholarship Endowment at The Citadel and the Janice Weinstein Kahn Endowment Fund with the New Orleans Jewish Federation.
