Dr. Jane Kesler Upshur

Dr. Jane Kesler Upshur of Johns Island, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 at Bishop Gadsden on September 26, 2026. Born in Winston-Salem NC, she was the daughter of James and Ethel Kesler. She was an inspiration to her family, friends, and her students at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Upshur retired in 1996 from MUSC as a Professor Emerita of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine after almost 30 years in service. She was a trailblazer as one of the few women doctors when she joined in 1967, and taught over one thousand medical and dental students, residents, and fellows during her tenure.

Jane greatly enjoyed working in the Unitarian churchyard gardens as an Eden-Keeper. She spent many good times with her life-long friends from the church and was active in several women’s groups. Jane was a terrific Mom, grandmother, and aunt, as well as a loving wife and a no-nonsense, clear-eyed pragmatist. She was deeply loved and admired by all who knew her and will be sorely missed.

Jane was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Dr. William Upshur, and her sister, Ethel (Cissy) Kesler. She is survived by her children Janice Sides (William) and Arthur Upshur (Lori), grandchildren James Upshur (Karen), Christine Upshur, Emily Upshur and Cheyenne Sides, and great grandchildren Eden Upshur and Jacob Upshur.

The Celebration of Life service will be held at the Unitarian Church of Charleston at 10 am on October 10th, 2026, with a reception following at Gage Hall. In lieu of flowers, please fondly remember Jane and donate your time to making this world a better place.
