Jane passed away peacefully on October 5, 2026, in Charleston, SC. Though dementia gradually took over the last ten years of her life, her beautiful smile and infectious love of dancing remained.
The daughter of Charles Eldridge Hughes (1978) and Jane Sinton Cardwell (1992), Jane was born on September 3, 1941. She briefly attended Greenville High but, at the insistence of “Big Jane” that she was having too much fun, her parents shipped her off to Ashley Hall in Charleston. Not long after graduating in 1959, she met Charles “Charlie” P. Lomel of Savannah while working as a medical secretary at Greenville General. They fell in love and were married the following year. She would say that for the first time, Charlie made her feel genuinely loved. That love and marriage would last 58 years, until his passing in September 2020.
They bought a house on Camille Avenue in Greenville where they welcomed their three sons. After relocating to Atlanta, GA., they added their fourth child and only daughter. Once again they moved, this time to Ocala, FL.
Jane and Charlie were very active in both Grace Episcopal Church and Christ the King during their 47 years in Ocala. She was deeply rooted in her faith and, while raising four children, she always made time to care for those in her community. She had a passion for genealogy, collecting antiques, and history. She was a founding member of the Historical Ocala Preservation Society (HOPS), as well an active member of the Women’s Club and Garden Club of Ocala.
She is survived by her brother, Charles E. Hughes (Anne Lucas); and her four children: Charles Jr. “Chip” (Lowelle) and his family, Charles III “Trey” (Mallie), Micah, Banks, and Presley, of Tampa, FL; Jody and his family, Lauren, Campbell, and Rachael, of Ocala, FL; David, of Ocala, FL; and Ginny Conlon (Kevin) and her family, Alexa and Maggie, of Charleston, SC.
Jane, "Gammy,” was adored by her nine grandchildren, whom she lovingly treated with repeated trips to Barnes & Noble. She felt “blessed over and over.” She truly believed in and trusted God, experiencing many answered prayers, the biggest being her grandchildren! As she would say, “They are perfect…..just perfect!”
Jane is now in the presence of Christ; the reward of a life well lived on faith and trust. A Celebration of Life will be held in Charleston on November 7, from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street. Her Memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm Friday, November 27, at Christ the King Church, 4440 S.E. 3rd Ave., Ocala, FL.
Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
