Her Funeral Service will be held Friday, June 30, 2017, at Saint James Church, 1872 Camp Road at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends following the service at the Saint James Ministry Center.
Jane was born on March 12, 1930 in Jacksonville, Florida, the only daughter of the late Arthur Livingstone and Octavia Leadbetter Brown. Jane was raised in Richmond, Virginia, graduating from John Marshall High School. She entered the work force at Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond. She moved to Charleston in 1948 and worked at SCE&G before meeting her husband, Benjamin Shinn Horne, Jr. They were married in 1950 at St. Philip's Episcopal Church and moved to Clemson College (now University) where he completed his studies and she was employed by the Dept. of Agriculture. She earned a PHT (putting husband through) as Ben received his BA in Economics. Moving back to Charleston after graduation, she was hired by Drs. Parker and Prioleau as secretary and physician's assistant. In 1952 she gave birth to her first son, Benjamin Shinn III and began life as a homemaker. In 1956 she gave birth to triplet sons, Arthur Livingstone, Brian Forrest and Curtis Bartholomew. Ten months later she gave birth to her only daughter, Nancy Jane. Jane enjoyed motherhood and kept busy with her five children.
After the children were in school, she returned to the work force at the request of Dr. J. Manly Stallworth who received a grant to study non-invasive methods to diagnose arterial disease at the new Vascular Research Laboratory at Roper Hospital. She filled the part time position of secretary and research assistant. Jane enjoyed research and working with a plethora of medical students, interns, residents and vascular fellows for several years. The research resulted in physiologic tests to diagnose arterial diseases and the lab became a clinical facility diagnosing patients with carotid and peripheral arterial and venous diseases. In learning to be a vascular technologist, she visited many laboratories in the United States to study other modalities of diagnoses. Jane was a charter member of The Society for Non Invasive Vascular Technology and served as the third President of this prestigious society in 1980-81. She attended and was a faculty member of many seminars on vascular disease and ultrasound diagnosis throughout the United States and in London. She planned and facilitated seven symposia in Charleston for vascular technologists from all over the country. Jane retired as Technical Director of the Vascular Lab after 33 years of service to Roper Hospital in 1992.
After retirement Jane became more active at Saint James Church on James Island. She served on the Vestry as Secretary, represented Saint James as a board member of Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community, served as President of Saint James Episcopal Church Women, was a member of the Cemetery Committee, a Kitchen Team leader, member of the Altar Guild, a Stephen Minister, and a leader of the Cancer Support Group. In the community she was a member and served as President of the Arion Auxiliary and a volunteer for Odyssey hospice, serving residents of the Bishop Gadsden community. Jane was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2002, underwent a successful surgery, and was pronounced cancer free. She was diagnosed with lung cancer again in 2008 and was the 8th patient to undergo Cyber Knife radiation again with complete success and was cancer free.
