Jane Olivia Evatt Hill

Jane Olivia Evatt Hill, 87, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of Max L. Hill, Jr., passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, July 1, 2017. Her funeral service will be held Friday, July 7, 2017, in Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt Street, Charleston, SC, 29401, at 11:00 a.m. Interment private. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Born December 8, 1929 in Greenville, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Naomi Gartrell Evatt and Dr. Clay Welborn Evatt, and the sister of the late Dr. Clay Welborn Evatt, Jr. She is survived by her husband of 66 years and their three children, daughter, Larkin Payne Hill, son, Max (Macky) Lloyd Hill, III (Jeanne), all of Charleston and daughter, Naomi Evatt Hill Blumenthal (Liviu) of Greenwood Lake, NY. She is also survived by her three grandchildren, Max L. Hill, IV, Charles Griffin Hill, and Ann Evatt Hill, all of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and a host of nieces and nephews.

The Evatts relocated to Charleston in 1934 when she was 5. Jane attended Charleston schools and graduated from Ashley Hall. She then graduated from Randolph Macon Women's College where she was a voice major, President of the Glee Club, and Secretary of her class. The Hills settled in Charleston after the Korean War. Jane soon became active in the musical community, assisting the late Elizabeth Rumple with the Bethel United Methodist Children's Choir and joining the church choir, where she served as a soprano soloist for many years. She also joined the incomparable musician and Choral Director, Emily Remington, and assisted in building the Charleston Singer's Guild (now the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus), writing the group's by-laws and serving as its first President. Over the years, Jane also composed many pieces of choral music, including television commercials and works performed in concert by the Chorus with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.

Most importantly of all, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
