Jane “Bubbie” Barshay Burns, 74, of Mt Pleasant, SC, passed away October 23, 2024, after a courageous and hard-fought battle with Parkinson’s Disease. A graveside service will be held at the KKBE Jewish Cemetery, Huguenin Ave, on Friday November 1st at 1:00 PM. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Chapel.
Jane was born January 20, 1950, in Charleston, SC and is preceded in death by her parents Selma and Samuel (Samy) Barshay, sisters, Wendy Barshay Block and Betsy Barshay Kaylie, granddaughter, Emma Jane Cooper and her beloved Erline (Dingy) Ladson.
Raised in Summerville, SC, she enjoyed spending days climbing trees, playing with their dog WeBeJa, and passing time with her dear friend Mary. Jane left Summerville to attend Vardell Hall High School in Raleigh, NC proceeded by Vanderbilt University, Peabody College of Education in Nashville, TN where she met husband, Thomas (Tommy) St. Clair Burns of Nashville. Jane graduated with a BA in Special Education and returned home to Summerville where Tommy went to work with her father and Uncle Aaron at Barshay's Department Store.
Jane and Tommy had three daughters, Laurie Burns, Caroline Stafford (Joe Stafford), and Claire Renaldo who were all raised in Greenwood, SC. She was a proud member of "THE Bridge Club" for over forty years, loved playing tennis with her team at the Greenwood Country Club, an active member/fundraiser for the American Lung Association and had a successful specialty food business, Lotus Chips, with her friend, Harriett Kinard. While Jane was involved in the community, one of her greatest joys was celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas with our dear friends, the Borgerts.
Finally, as promised, carrying on one of her many coveted traditions...
As anyone who knew her may surmise,
ending with a poem should come as no surprise.
As anyone who knew her may surmise,
ending with a poem should come as no surprise.
Known to most as Momma, Bubbie, Jane or Jack,
Making others feel special, she had quite the knack.
Humble, honest, witty, determined and kind,
Although snubbed by her dog, Eli, no matter how hard she pined.
An amazing cook, designer and entertainer extraordinaire,
She brought so many together her inclusive nature was special and rare.
She taught us to slow down and see the beauty in life,
Always happy despite her disease and physical strife.
A peace maker never wanting to create a fuss,
She will be dearly missed and remembered by so many of us.
