Jane Cade Brown, 94, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Charles A. Brown, died peacefully in her sleep Saturday, December 7, 2013. Her Funeral Service will be held Friday, December 13, 2013 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Stuhr's Downtown Chapel. A private burial will be held in Magnolia Cemetery.
Jane was born February 17, 1919, in Willington, SC, to Mary Slaughter Cade and Dr. Samuel Tinsley Cade, the younger of two daughters. Her mother moved the family to Charleston and for a time, ran a boarding house on Broad Street after Dr. Cade's death in 1925. Jane attended North Charleston High School and worked at Kerrison's Department Store downtown.
In 1943, Jane married Charles A. Brown of Charleston, who was superintendent of the Standard Oil Refinery in the North Area. At the time of his death in 1962, he was serving as Chairman of the Charleston County School Board. The former C.A. Brown High School on the East Side was named for him.
Jane was predeceased by her sister, Sarah C. Braid in 1992 and by her beloved daughter, Karol A. Sample in 2008. Jane loved crosswords, music (she played the ukulele and organ), and conversation. She leaves behind family, friends and caregivers who will miss her wit and spirit, including: son, Charles A. Brown, Jr. (Kate) of Narberth, Pa.; granddaughter, Leslie C. Poteat; grandson Jeffrey A. Sample and son-in-law, Jack W. Sample, all of Charleston; granddaughter, Grace E. Brown of Loveland, Colorado and nephew, Matthew T. Braid, Jr. (Jackie), of Greenwood, SC.
