Jamie Larue Nettles Jr was born on March 1, 1939 in Lake City, SC to the late Margaret and Jamie Nettles. The family moved to North Charleston and eventually Sullivan's Island, SC where Jamie's father was employed by the Charleston Naval Shipyard. Jamie attended Moultrie High School in neighboring Mt Pleasant, SC where he graduated in 1957, and went on to obtain his Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from The University of South Carolina.
After graduating college, Jamie landed a job as a staff reporter for the Post and Courier in Charleston and covered the police beat. There he met Trellis Hanna who worked as a secretary for the Charleston Police Department. Jamie and Trellis were married on February 6, 1965 and resided in Mt. Pleasant for several years, giving birth to their son Shawn in 1970. Shortly after the birth of their son, Jamie obtained a position with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in Atlanta, Georgia, so they moved to the suburb of Decatur in the Early 1970s. While in Atlanta, Jamie became an avid ice hockey fan, as he and Trellis would often enjoy the symphony and other events Atlanta had to offer. In the late 1970s they returned to Charleston to finish his career at the Post and Courier until 2005. He did a lot of editing work, serving the newspaper for more than 25 years.
Jamie was a lifetime member of the Sullivan's Island Baptist Church, serving as deacon and trustee. Jamie was also an avid runner, completing two marathons and numerous 10K events in the Charleston Area. He also enjoyed camping and hiking, and especially loved the Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smokey Mountains. Jamie also became an artist later in life adopting watercolor painting and decoupage as projects he would constantly enjoy. He was a sweet man loved by all and we are all going to miss him dearly, know he had a great life and is now in a better place.
He is survived by his wife, Trellis Etta Nettles; son, Shawn Larue Nettles; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Eugene Nettles.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sullivan's Island Baptist Church, 1753 Central Ave. Sullivan's Island 29482.
